Florida Family Association sent out an email alert on August 16, 2011 titled “AARP uses member resources to advocate same-sex marriage and special rights for immoral behavior.” The alert encouraged supporters to cancel their AARP membership and/or send an email to AARP officials. The August 16, 2011 alert is posted below.
Several supporters have since informed Florida Family Association that they cancelled their AARP membership. A couple examples of the responses FFA received include:
Helen A. of Babson Park Florida wrote “Thank you for the information concerning ‘Cancel AARP membership and get a refund.’ I did that and I’m to get a refund. Keep up the good work. In His Name, Helen A.”
Mary P. of Perrysville Indiana wrote “I cancelled AARP” on her postal donation reply card.
AARP responded to some supporters with the full email posted below which stated a position that is just not credible. AARP states in part: “Since resources are limited and the issues are numerous, the Board focuses AARP support on issues of broad effect on older Americans. Therefore, AARP has no position on, and does not advocate for, gay marriage, adoption by same sex parents, or gays in the military.”
It costs real dollars to pay an employee to research, create and update the content for the AARP pride page. It requires real dollars for upper level management to review and sign off on the pride page content. It costs real dollars to pay for the band width needed to include that page. Those real dollars come from the resources provided by member fees and income from member services.
Additionally, Page 38 of the July/August AARP bulletin contained an article titled “Pride Is Ageless” which announced AARP’s plans for “advocacy efforts in the LGBT arena.” The article stated “AARP has created a new online home for the older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. The page links to news stories on such hot topics as same-sex marriage, gay adoption and the repeal of the military’s ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy, as well as articles on personal finance, travel and other issues of interest. In addition, the site clarifies AARP’s positions and advocacy efforts in the LGBT arena. Check out the page at aarp.org/ pride”
Page 38 of AARP’s July/August bulletin and the obvious fact that web site production and operation requires resources clearly contradicts the below email response from AARP’s Lisa M.

Thank you for contacting the AARP national office. We are often asked whether AARP supports gay marriage or a gay or lesbian lifestyle in our policies and publications, or why AARP staff would attend Gay Pride events. We appreciate being able to respond to your concerns.

People featured in our publications always have been chosen for interest and for the timeliness or uniqueness of their endeavors and contributions. Our editorial policies are based on the same principle of inclusiveness as our public policies.
AARP serves diverse communities by providing information through health fairs, town hall meetings and other community events. Gay Pride events are a natural place for AARP staff to share information about the important issues that AARP addresses.

The Policy Book is a complete record of the current AARP public policies published biennially. Policies are comprehensively reviewed every other year and more frequently as needed. The Board then adopts them, or not, after careful consideration.

AARP’s advocating for same-sex marriage, homosexual adoption, repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” military policy and special rights for immoral behavior is disrespectful, dishonest and irresponsible.
The overwhelming majority of American’s who voted on a marriage constitutional amendment wanted marriage to be defined as “ one man and one woman” in the public policy of thirty (30) states. Most states’ voter approval for traditional marriage exceeded seventy percent (70%). Click here to see detailed report on vote percentages.
AARP members’ support for a “one man one woman” marriage public policy as the building block for a healthy and proper society is most likely much higher than the voting percentages on marriage amendments given the average age of AARP members. AND given the age of most military veterans the AARP’s position on “gays in the military” is also out of touch with AARP members.
It is truly disrespectful for the AARP to advocate LGBT public policy positions which are grossly opposed by the overwhelming majority of their members. In fact, it is downright dishonest and irresponsible.
AARP members need to realize that part of their membership fee or profits from AARP services may be used to promote same-sex marriage, homosexual adoption, repeal of “ don’t ask, don’t tell” military policy and special rights for immoral behavior.
