CAIR Asks NJ Sheriff to Reject Training by Islamophobe

(SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ, 10/27/15) - The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ) today announced that it has asked a sheriff in that state to disassociate his department from a November 2 training program featuring notorious Islamophobe Walid Shoebat.

[NOTE: CAIR-NJ sent similar requests to other local law enforcement agencies asking that officers not be reimbursed for the cost of Shoebat's training or be allowed to take the training during working hours.]

CAIR says the training event, "Know Your Enemy," is offered "for law enforcement only" by Courses Offering Police Specialization (C.O.P.S.) and is being advertised with Ocean County Police Academy contact information.

The academy is operated by the Ocean County Sheriff's Office in Toms River, N.J. A number of those associated with C.O.P.S. are also employed by local law enforcement agencies.

In a letter to Sheriff Michael G. Mastronardy, CAIR-NJ Executive Director James R. Sues wrote in part:

"I respectfully request that your academy publicly disassociate itself from this event and that no in service training credit should be offered to any New Jersey law enforcement personnel who attend the event on their own time.

"Shoebat is perhaps the nation's most notorious Islamophobe....

Sheriff Mastronardy currently serves as the Second Vice President of the Sheriff's Association of New Jersey (SANJ.) He is past president of the Ocean County Association of Chiefs of Police and the New Jersey State Chiefs of Police Association.

It is most troubling that the Council on American Islamic Relations challenges law enforcement agencies across the country to withdraw from seminars that provide valuable information to law enforcement to improve public safety.   It is truly ironic given CAIR’s history and agenda.

Florida Family Association prepared an email for subscribers to send to Sheriff Mastronardy, Ocean County Police Academy and Sheriffs' Association of New Jersey to show support for the seminar.  Thousands of people sent emails to these officials.  CAIR issued a news release on November 9, 2015 entitled Islamophobe Walid Shoebat Trains New Jersey Law Enforcement which confirmed that the seminar was held.
